An enraged young gunman opened fire in a crowded McDonald’s restaurant on the city’s west side today, wounding seven teen-agers, none critically, police said.

Deputy Police Chief Joseph Areeda said the gunman, who used a sawed-off rifle or shotgun, fled by car after the shooting. He said there was “an altercation” between the seven young people, who were eating lunch, and “someone else.”

Witnesses said the gunman believed that the seven youths had vandalized his car.

A student from Cody High School across the street, who declined to give his name, said the same people involved in the shooting had fought earlier in the day at the high school.

“We feel it might be gang-related, we’re not sure,” Areeda said.
