Students at UC San Diego demonstrated Friday as part of a nationwide protest against apartheid in South Africa.

Lt. J. Dyer of the UCSD police estimated that 300 students attended the daylong protest on campus, which began at 10 a.m. with students taking part in a moment of silence recognized at rallies throughout the nation and concluded in the evening with a teach-in. Only a handful of UCSD students heeded the call for a classroom strike Friday.

While the event did not generate the campuswide support shown at a spirited rally attended by more than 2,000 students protesting apartheid last April and the strike failed to materialize, Robert Swain of the UCSD Caolition for a Free South Africa, called the protest a success.

At San Diego State University, about 150 students attended an anti-apartheid rally Friday morning. Sgt. Bob Wheeler of the SDSU police said there were no incidents. Nationwide, there were large demonstrations in downtown New York, Boston, Minneapolis, Phoenix and Nashville, and smaller rallies in virtually every major city in the country and on scores of college campuses.

At 11 a.m. today, local anti-apartheid groups plan to march from Lincoln High School at 49th Street and Imperial Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
