Cigarette Ads, Packs to Bear New Warnings
Beginning today, smokers will be given a heavier dose of health education on their cigarette packages than in the past.
Under a federal law passed last year, all cigarette advertisements and packages are required to bear one of four new warnings that describe some of the dangers that smoking poses to health.
The warnings, each preceded by the words “Surgeon General’s Warning,” are:
--Smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease and emphysema, and may complicate pregnancy.
--Quitting smoking now greatly reduces serious risks to your health.
--Smoking by pregnant women may result in fetal injury, premature birth and low birth weight.
--Cigarette smoke contains carbon monoxide.
