A San Francisco man who quit his $36,000-a-year job to care for his AIDS-stricken lover has been granted unemployment benefits by an administrative law judge who reversed an earlier decision. The man, a 34-year-old San Rafael computer instructor, gave up his job in May to care for his lover, who died in June. The instructor has since been unable to find work. In reversing the state’s decision not to grant benefits, Robert Mason of the state Employment Development Department’s San Francisco office said: “Even though a blood or marital relationship did not exist, it is recognized that non-blood and non-legal relationships may be established which are as meaningful or more meaningful than relationships created by blood or the bond of marriage.” The man will receive a maximum of $642 a month while looking for work.
