The Soviet Union won five of the 10 available gold medals at the World Freestyle Wrestling championships that ended Sunday in Budapest, Hungary.

The United States finished a strong second in the overall medal standings, ahead of such powerful wrestling nations as Bulgaria, Iran and East Germany.

Bill Sherr of the United States defeated Hassan Mohebbi of Iran, 7-4, in the final of the 198-pound division.

Raul Cascaret won Cuba’s first world title, scoring the biggest upset in the tournament as he beat Olympic champion Dave Shultz of the United States, 3-1, in the final of the 163-pound division.
