Eric Jacobsen, the 29-year-old son of Beirut hostage David Jacobsen, was given a proclamation by the Huntington Beach City Council Monday as part of the council’s proclaiming October “Hostage Awareness Month.”

David Jacobsen, administrator of the American University Hospital in West Beirut, has been missing since May 28 when he was kidnaped by gunmen as he walked to work.

Apart from a four-page handwritten letter the family received from the senior Jacobsen last month, Eric Jacobsen said Monday that he has heard “absolutely nothing” about his father’s condition.

Jacobsen read briefly from his father’s letter and then urged the packed council chambers to write the President and other officials to stress the urgency of his father’s situation, as well as that of the five other Americans still being held hostage in Lebanon.

The City Council also ordered a yellow flag to be flown from the civic center flagpole “as a constant reminder of the captivity of one of our citizens of Huntington Beach, so long as David Jacobsen is held by these criminals.”

A ceremony to hoist the flag will be held next Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. in front of the civic center.
