A federal judge rejected a request to halt the start of classes at the Rhode Island State Police Academy in Providence, where an all-white class has prompted charges of racism and nepotism. But U.S. District Judge Bruce M. Selya denied a temporary restraining order and said classes could begin immediately. The current force of 151 state troopers includes one woman and two black men. There are 20 vacancies.
