Kasparov, Karpov Play to Draw in Game 17

Challenger Gary Kasparov kept his lead over Anatoly Karpov in the world chess championship Thursday when their 17th game ended in a draw on the 29th move. Kasparov, playing white, opened with the Nimzo-Indian Defense.

Kasparov, 22, has 9 points to Karpov’s 8 with seven matches to play.

Whoever wins a game in the tournament gets one point while draws are worth half a point to each competitor. The first player to get 12 points wins, with Karpov retaining his crown in case he and Kasparov are tied at the end of 24 matches.

Kasparov has won three games and Karpov two. The remaining 12 ended in draws.
