The State Department said today it has granted a visa to Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega to attend the 40th anniversary celebration of the United Nations.

But the Nicaraguan Embassy said Ortega was forced to cancel plans to visit several other cities during his U.S. stay because of a delay in granting the visa.

The United States acted on the visa request after Nicaragua lodged a strong protest with Washington on Wednesday, complaining that the delay was an affront to Nicaraguan dignity.

The embassy said Ortega is due to arrive in New York tonight.
