A plan to build a conference center across from Gateway Plaza’s Holiday Inn has been withdrawn, and the City Council is now considering a series of restaurants for the 6.2-acre parcel next to the Santa Ana Freeway.
Builder Lew Wolff, who developed the 300-room Holiday Inn, proposed the conference center last year, but decided earlier this month to abandon the plan. He said the city’s reluctance to endorse his proposal led to his decision. City officials say Wolff never submitted a firm plan, and there was concern about adequate parking if a conference center was built.
A Los Angeles firm, Boardwalk Properties, wants to build a string of restaurants on the vacant site across from the hotel, “a restaurant row of sorts,” said Carol Cooley, a La Mirada spokesman. Council members are expected to decide at their next meeting, Nov. 12, whether to approve Boardwalk Properties’ plan. While the lineup of eateries has not been set, several restaurants have been mentioned, including Fuddrucker’s, an El Torito and Jeremiah’s.
