Long Beach
A Pittsburg firm has won the right to build a planned trash-to-energy plant in Long Beach after submitting a low bid of $81.8 million for the project, city officials have announced.
The Dravo Corporation should begin construction of the project later this year. The plant, which will burn trash to produce electricity, should be operational by the summer of 1988.
Under terms of the deal, Dravo also will be responsible for operating the plant for its first five years.
About 900 tons of garbage can be burned each day in the trash system to produce electricity for 18,000 homes. The burning trash heats water boilers, producing steam that turns turbines to generate the electricity.
