The Peruvian government Friday dismissed Gen. Raul Pareja, the chief of its national uniformed police force, the Civil Guard, in the latest stage of a shake-up of the security forces. Gen. Carlos Rodriguez Tirado was named to replace Pareja.

The three-month-old government of President Alan Garcia has dismissed 46 police generals and 118 police colonels in a cleanup drive. Some of those fired were suspected of having ties to the Peru’s lucrative cocaine trade, Interior Ministry officials said.
