IRELAND, CONT.

Share

If you don’t get David McCalden and his Ulster-American Heritage Foundation draped all over your rear ends this week, I’ll be surprised.

The headline over McCalden’s letter of Oct. 20 read, “Getting His Irish Up.” Wrong! McCalden was, in fact, getting his Brrrritish up. Obviously, you weren’t paying close attention to his letter. You see, true blue (excuse me, orange) Loyalists consider themselves British first, last and always. Indeed, they would let you cut out their tongues before they would let you call them Irish.

James Galway, on the other hand, has often given me the impression that he considers himself Irish . Period. (Religion doesn’t always determine one’s loyalties. Many of Ireland’s greatest nationalists, and chauvinists, have been Protestant.)
