A DIFFERENT WAY

Sweet peas in pots? An unlikely idea at first thought. Sweet peas are speedy annual vines that need rich, deep soil and something to clamber up on. But here they are--complete harmony between plant, pot and the pole they are trained upon.

Deep containers are the solution. In the ground, sweet peas usually are planted in deep trenches. In these containers (from the Hans Sumpf Co., Madera) they have the equivalent of those trenches. The perfectly proportioned bamboo poles look pretty even before the peas cover them.

These sweet peas were planted in February from quart nursery pots and were photographed in March, but they could have been planted at any time in fall or winter. When they’re finished, another difficult vine, morning glory, can be planted for summer color.
