An Iraqi warplane fired a missile into a Greek supertanker in the Persian Gulf today, ripping a hole in the ship’s hull and setting it ablaze with 16,000 tons of oil aboard, Lloyd’s of London said.

No casualties were immediately reported in the attack near Iran’s main oil terminal at Kharg Island. The blast set the supertanker Canaria ablaze and ripped a hole in the hull, flooding the engine room and forcing all crew members, except the captain, to abandon ship, Lloyd’s said. The Dutch salvage tug Amsterdam, accompanied by a firefighting rescue vessel, later took the supertanker in tow, Lloyd’s reported.
