A funeral services was held here Friday for Alonzo Garcelon, a dentist who served as president of the National Rifle Assn.

Garcelon, who died Monday at the age of 72 of unannounced causes in a Portland, Me., hospital, was a champion marksman who consistently criticized gun-control advocates and the “liberal media” after he took over the NRA earlier this year.

Garcelon had practiced dentistry in Augusta since 1943, said David Bryant, funeral director at the Knowlton & Hewins funeral home.
