Q: When I graduated high school, my parents bought me an expensive, navy-blue, wool suit. It still fits, but as a college sophomore I feel that it’s too conservative for me now. Is there a way to wear the suit the way Don Johnson wears his with a T-shirt on “Miami Vice,” or is navy too formal a color for such casual treatment?--W.I. A: A navy suit is, indeed, the most formal, but it can certainly be worn with more-casual shirts. Instead of “Miami Vice”-style T-shirts, you might wear your suit with a colorful sweat shirt, as illustrated here. The Gap has basic crew-neck sweat shirts in 21 colors, including pale yellow, bright yellow and gold; all would go with your navy suit and are available in sizes small through extra-large for $13.

Q: What kind of boot looks best with long, ankle-grazing skirts?--E.Z. A: Flat-heel, ankle-high boots, not unlike the ones worn by Robin Hood, give long skirts a contemporary look, much in the spirit of Madonna. If you wear high-heel boots with longer skirts, you’ll look like a throwback to the Russian peasant revival of 1976 and not like part of current fashion.
