NEW DELHI —
Torrential rains Monday lashed the southern state of Tamil Nadu, causing landslides and collapsing walls.
At least 31 people were killed, and 14,000 fled their homes, the Press Trust of India said.
The downpour began Sunday in the coastal district of Thanjavur, swamping more than 100,000 acres of rice paddies. It paralyzed traffic in the Tamil Nadu state capital of Madras, 1,050 miles south of New Delhi, the news agency said.
