Sam Segnar has resigned as chairman and chief executive of HNG Internorth, a company formed in July when InterNorth of Omaha merged with Houston Natural Gas.

In an announcement Tuesday, the company said Kenneth L. Lay, 43, president and chief operating officer, will replace Segnar, assuming the title of president and chief executive, while Willis A. Strauss, 63, former InterNorth chairman and a longtime employee, was appointed chairman of HNG Internorth.

In a statement released by the company, Segnar, 58, said he “voluntarily resigned” from the leadership posts. The resignation was effective immediately.

“I had announced some time ago that I would give up my position in January, 1987, to become senior chairman, once I felt the merger had been sufficiently digested,” he said in the statement.

The corporation also announced that it will keep its headquarters in Omaha, while Houston will become the operating base for most of its major subsidiaries.
