The U.N. General Assembly, by a vote of 122 to 19 with 12 abstentions, approved a resolution calling on the Soviet Union to pull its troops out of Afghanistan. The resolution urged all the parties concerned to work for “the urgent achievement of a political solution.” The vote ended the General Assembly’s annual debate on the Afghan crisis. A similar resolution was approved last year.
