Computers Going to Kindergarten in Lowell, Mass.

Industry’s call for more computer and high technology-oriented public school programs has reached down to the kindergarten level in the Lowell school system, MIS Week reports.

According to the publication, Lowell’s 27 schools have launched a major computer literacy program, beginning at the kindergarten level and continuing through high school. They stress basic skills, reading computer literacy and word processing.

It is one of the nation’s first school systems to establish a local area network of computers that can expand greatly the effectiveness of teachers in reaching students, according to the publication. The network ties the classroom computers together for overall monitoring and teacher assistance.
