The Nation : Storm Near Puerto Rico
Tropical Storm Kate became Hurricane Kate about 180 miles north of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the storm strengthened as it drifted west-southwest, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables, Fla., said. The storm had maximum sustained winds approaching 85 m.p.h. near its center, 150 miles north of San Juan. Warnings of coastal flooding and beach erosion from large swells were issued for the north shores of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
