‘What Did Jesus Say or Not Say?’

I have to feel sorry for those liberal Bible scholars who plan to spend the next five years rewriting Jesus’ words, as handed down to us in the New Testament gospels. If they really believe that the gospel writers were only sometimes inspired by God and actually created parts of Scripture by their own human devices, it is no wonder that by their own admission they rarely discuss faith and theology.

How can one profess a biblical faith in personal salvation by the shed blood of Christ and at the same time judge only certain parts of the Bible to be trustworthy? Either the Bible is true or it is not, and if it is not, it makes no sense to be bound by a faith and practice based on selected parts of it that anyone might pick and choose.

Such presumptiveness makes a mockery of God-given biblical authority and reflects a willful rejection of the belief that “All Scripture is inspired by God” (II Timothy 3:16). More importantly, it ignores the point that the gospels “have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31). The eternal life that John is talking about is not to be found by revising the written revelation of God Himself.
