General Motors said it will lay off 1,723 workers.

The company attributed the layoffs to falling demand for the mid-size Buick Regal. The workers--533 at an assembly plant in Pontiac, Mich., and 1,190 at a body-stamping plant in Flint, Mich.--were not given recall dates. However, GM expects to call them back next summer, spokeswoman Betsy Hayhow said.
