Townspeople near Colombia’s Nevado del Ruiz volcano reacted angrily when they learned that a forced night evacuation from their homes to the mountains was only a pracitce drill. But they won’t go back, fearing a repeat of the eruption and avalanche that killed at least 25,000 people last week. Mayor Joel Hartman of Mariquita, apparently the only town involved in the evacuation, charged that the action provoked a “a high degree of anxiety.” Victor G. Ricardo, director of the National Emergency Committee set up to deal with the disaster, said he ordered the drill “to keep the population alert.”
