A robot has obtained the first samples of concrete from the highly contaminated basement of the crippled Unit 2 nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island near Harrisburg, Pa., the operator of the power plant said. The samples “will be used in planning the decontamination of the basement,” a statement said. The Unit 2 reactor was wrecked on March 28, 1979, in a near-meltdown, the nation’s worst commercial nuclear power accident.
