Swiss Told to Keep Bazookas on Own Side
Tiny Liechtenstein warned its larger neighbor, Switzerland, on Friday that it must control military activities on the countries’ shared border if good relations are to continue.
Liechtenstein complained that a big forest fire was set off by a bazooka shell fired during a Swiss army exercise last week, destroying 500 acres of woodland in the St. Luzisteig mountain pass.
About 800 firefighters from Liechtenstein and Switzerland brought the blaze under control early Friday, 12 hours after it began. The woods form an avalanche barrier for the surrounding mountains.
Liechtenstein Prime Minister Hans Brunhart accused the Swiss army of irresponsibility.
