Q: Could you recommend a bridesmaid gown that would look good on sizes ranging from 8 to 20? Also, I need to find low-heel satin pumps that can be dyed to match. I’m on a limited budget and would prefer to spend no more than $150.--M.M. A: The lace-over-satin gown illustrated here will span those sizes in style. On Page 184 of the current J. C. Penney catalogue, the surplice-closing gown is available in gray and sand, for $100. If you want to add color, replace the satin cummerbund. A pale pink would go well with the sand, and a pale blue would complement the gray. White satin pumps are available in both high and mid heels for $34. Illustrated on Page 205, they come with their own shoe-dye kit for $5. Dye colors include royal blue, romance blue, huckleberry, aubergine, dark wine, wine, Daphne rose, rosette, champagne and black.

Q: I have two strands of real pearls that end just below the collarbone. They seem to look strange with dresses, even the simplest wool jersey shirtdresses. How else can I wear my pearls this season?--K.W. A: Wear them the way Grace Kelly used to--with cashmere sweaters. Or add several gold chains and some longer strands of fake pearls a la Chanel. Mixing your jewelry media is very much a part of today’s Chanel look.
