‘Big Brother on Campus’

Being a recent graduate of the University of California at Irvine in the school of political science, I take exception to Beichman’s article, which supports groups like Accuracy in Academia.

In my years at Irvine I experienced a professor who believed in the virtues of Marxism. He opened my eyes to the works of not only Marx, but also C.B. Macpherson and Bertell Ollman.

After reading these works something really amazing happened. My beliefs in capitalism and the American way became stronger. A correct understanding of Marx to me means a rejection of Marx not based on hearsay or propaganda, but on rational thought.

What Beichman is saying should be taken as a tremendous insult to students everywhere. Students need to be exposed to Marx and then be allowed to reject or accept his ideology. Only by having a true understanding can a student make a rational decision. Not all students are job-seeking robots believing anything they hear in the classroom. Censorship of students’ rights to learn Marxist thought cannot be tolerated.

Perhaps the Accuracy in Academia group should focus its goals on professors who do not allow students to make their own decisions in controversial issues. But going after professors for loading up their lectures on Communist thought only stifles the main objective of the university, the pursuit of truth.
