Stamp Spat Cancels New Asian Amity
A clash over a postage stamp showing a map of territory claimed by both India and Pakistan broke out Sunday at the conference here of South Asian leaders.
A ceremony was canceled in which the seven heads of state and government were to postmark first-day covers from each of their countries to commemorate the newly formed South Asian Assn. for Regional Cooperation.
India protested because Pakistan’s stamp bore a map showing India’s northern state of Jammu and Kashmir as part of neither India nor Pakistan, a Bangladeshi official said.
India and Pakistan have fought wars involving Kashmir, the northernmost state of India under British colonial rule, since they won independence from Britain in 1947. India controls two-thirds of the disputed territory and Pakistan the rest.
