U.S. Ships New Zealand Bars Won’t Be Named
U.S. warships refused entry to New Zealand ports because they may be carrying nuclear weapons will not be publicly identified, Deputy Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer said Sunday.
The decision not to name the vessels was regarded as another concession in an attempt to placate the United States, which has threatened to withdraw from the ANZUS defense alliance with Australia and New Zealand if the ban on U.S. nuclear port calls is enacted into law.
Palmer added, however, that New Zealand will not give in on its policy of refusing entry to ships that may be carrying nuclear weapons.
