A Canadian who is traveling around the world in a wheelchair in a bid to educate people about paraplegics said Monday he has journeyed through 24 countries and traveled 10,870 miles--nearly half his 24,901-mile trip.

“We have been overwhelmed by the amount of support given. Everywhere we’ve been, people have been opening their hearts,” said Rick Hansen, 28, who set out from Vancouver, British Columbia, in March, rolled overland to Miami and then toured Europe.

Hansen, confined to a wheelchair after a road accident when he was 15, said he travels three days out of four, averaging 70 miles a day.
