Samuel K. Doe, Liberia’s head of state, lifted a monthlong curfew and ordered the release of 14 people who were arrested after a Nov. 12 coup attempt. In a radio broadcast, Doe said the government does not have sufficient proof to detain the 14 any longer, but he asked that they remain available to assist in an investigation. The coup attempt followed the Oct. 15 elections, in which Doe was declared the winner with 51% of the vote. The opposition has charged extensive voting irregularities.
