Israeli Spying on United States
What’s the surprise? Israel has stolen fissionable materials and nuclear triggers from the United States; destroyed a U.S. electronic intelligence ship, killing Americans; unilaterally undertaken acts of war against targets of opportunity in Iraq, Lebanon, and Tunisia; opposed any U.S. efforts to bring a just and balanced peace to the Middle East; interfered in our domestic politics; and sold restricted arms to Iran--arms paid for by American taxpayers.
Is there any reason not to expect spies?
Now that “damage control” is under way, we can expect to hear claims of ignorance and indignation from the Israelis, and the usual professions of “friendship” by both sides, as this, like other incidents, is quietly swept away.
When will we learn that “friendship” is an irrelevant term in international relations? Nations simply have greater or lesser degrees of common interests and of common principles. When events move “friends” into the areas where national interests or principles are not common, we can expect them to act as opponents--which they are.
Israel is certainly no exception, and should be treated accordingly--perhaps especially since that state is held together by the American taxpayer.
