A group of Communist youths in Italy’s “red belt” staged a mock trial of movie tough-man Rambo but absolved him on grounds of diminished responsibility, Italian newspapers reported.

Staunchly Marxist Bologna’s Federation of Young Communists organized the stunt to dramatize opposition to violence in films featuring the fictional Vietnam avenger and former Green Beret played by actor Sylvester Stallone, the newspapers said.

During the spoof hearing in a mock courtroom, John Rambo was accused of illegal occupation of a public jungle, invading a foreign state and instigating violence.

At the end of the “trial,” the would-be judge announced Rambo had been absolved, the reports in Il Messaggero of Rome and La Stampa of Turin said.

“I ask for clemency, not repressive sentences. Rambo seems to be repressed enough on his own, immature, affected by problems of childishness,” said Beniamino Placido, the Communist actor.

Placido ordered Rambo be re-educated to cure his violent tendencies by undergoing a “long period of penitence” helping Nobel Peace Prize winner Mother Teresa in Calcutta.
