To become a part of Orange County’s first major arts festival for children, the city reached into its pocket last week and donated $2,000 to the “Imagination Celebration.”

“It’s a minimal amount for Anaheim to be a part of it,” said Councilwoman Miriam Kaywood, who called the selection of Orange County as a site for the festival “a great coup for the county.”

The March 8-15 arts festival next year is part of a nationwide program founded by the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington.

Orange County was the only Southern California site selected to participate in the festival, which will feature art events, art education workshops and school programs, among other events, aimed at school children and their families.

More than a dozen local organizations will participate in the festival, including the Newport Harbor Art Museum, the Orange County Philharmonic Society and the Orange County Arts Alliance.

The program will begin March 8 at the South Coast Repertory Theatre in Costa Mesa. Other programs are set throughout the county, including the Brea, Mission Viejo and South Coast Plaza malls.
