Cherokees 1st Major Tribe to Be Headed by Woman

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. —
The first woman to lead a major Indian tribe formally took office Saturday as principal chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, the nation’s second largest.
Wilma Mankiller will lead the 68,000-member tribe, second only to the 150,000-member Navajo Nation of Arizona and New Mexico.
