The World : Looters Seized in Armero

Share

Hundreds of looters in Armero, Colombia, were arrested last week, one month after about 23,000 people were killed in a volcanic mud slide that buried the prosperous farming town, Colombian authorities said. A military officer said that in the past three or four days there had been a recurrence of looting that began immediately after the eruption. He said several hundred looters had been arrested, and “today (Saturday) alone we picked up nearly 100.” During the initial wave of looting, soldiers reportedly shot to death four people caught in the act.
