Six of 10 children in a family for whom police had started a Christmas collection died in a fire that engulfed their home in this Chicago suburb, authorities said Sunday.

A teen-aged brother of the victims alerted authorities to the blaze late Saturday.

The dead, five sisters and a brother whose ages ranged from 8 to 15, were among 10 children living in the house with their divorced mother, Patricia Krawczyk, who recently suffered a heart attack, police said.

The mother and three of her children were not home at the time of the fire, which was under investigation.

In the Detroit suburb of Southfield, a fire killed six elderly residents of a hospice and rehabilitation center Sunday, and forced the evacuation of about 30 people, some of them bedridden, authorities said.

Officials had not determined the cause of the fire.

In Dayton, Ohio, three children died in a house fire of undetermined origin. Their parents escaped the blaze.
