Navy Detonates Torpedo Caught in Fishing Nets

NEWPORT, R. I. —
A 14-foot World War II Navy torpedo that may have been beneath the waves for more than 40 years was safely detonated Tuesday after it became tangled in the nets of a fishing ship, military officials said. The torpedo was exploded in about 30 feet of water at a Navy base off Gould Island.
