Tax Rebel Gets 3-Year Term

HARTFORD, Conn. — Tax rebel Irwin Schiff, who wrote the best-seller “How Anyone Can Stop Paying Income Tax,” was sentenced today to three years in prison and three years probation for federal tax evasion involving more than $49,000 from 1980 through 1982.
U.S. District Court Judge Peter C. Dorsey also fined Schiff $30,000 and ordered him not to get involved in any tax protest activities while on probation. Schiff, 57, had faced a possible maximum 16 years in prison and $130,000 in fines.
