A top immigration official called for the ouster of San Francisco supervisors who support a proposal that would grant sanctuary to Guatemalan and Salvadoran refugees. “There is a serious . . . movement that is going to damage the future of this nation,” said Harold Ezell, Western regional commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. “This kind of thing is not right for public officials to pass.” Ezell also criticized Pope John Paul II for allowing Catholic groups to harbor what Ezell called illegal aliens.
