The Basque separatist organization ETA on Wednesday claimed responsibility for the killing of a retired civil guard general in the northern Spanish city of Pamplona on Monday, Spain’s state radio said.

It said ETA (Basque Homeland and Freedom) made the claim in telephone calls to several Basque radio stations and newspapers.

Retired Brig. Juan Atares Pena was shot through the back of the neck in the capital of the province of Navarre, home of Mikel Zabalza, a Basque who died last month while in the custody of paramilitary civil guardsmen.

ETA has killed 36 people this year in its fight for an independent Basque state.
