Coast Christmas Tournament : It’s 4 Straight Wins for Oilers : And 5 Straight Scoreless Minutes for Santa Ana Valley

Huntington Beach High School held Santa Ana Valley scoreless for five minutes in the game and won, 60-45, Thursday night in the opening round of the Coast Christmas Classic in Costa Mesa.

It was the fourth straight victory for the Oilers (5-5) and moved them into the second round against second-seeded Corona del Mar at 8:40 tonight. It was also the Oilers’ second victory over Santa Ana Valley this season. Huntington Beach defeated the Falcons, 46-41, in the La Quinta Tournament last week.

The Falcons (3-4) committed 27 turnovers in the game and failed to make a field goal in the fourth quarter until Michael Whitlock scored on a baseline shot with 2:53 remaining. Santa Ana Valley had moved to within 35-32 of the Oilers in the third quarter.

Ken Kao led a fourth-quarter surge in which the Oilers outscored Santa Ana Valley, 19-5. Kao scored eight of his game-high 15 points in the last quarter.

“Ken has been one of our steadiest players this year,” said Roy Miller, Huntington Beach coach. “We’ve had better efforts this season. Our biggest problem all year has been turnovers. We could easily be 8-2 if we eliminated some of our mistakes.”

The game featured the varsity debut of Kevin Brazzel for the Oilers. Miller moved the 6-foot 3-inch junior up from the junior varsity Monday, and he had six points in his first game.

“Kevin is one of the better shooters in our program, and I think we’re going to need his shooting once league play begins,” Miller said.

Alonzo Jamison was the only Falcon player to score in double figures with 13 points. He had three crowd-pleasing dunks, but generally was not an offensive weapon against the Oilers’ 2-3 zone.

“I had Alonzo inside for the first half, but he wasn’t getting the ball,” said Tom Riach, Santa Ana Valley coach. “I moved him outside in the second half, but it didn’t make much difference. We didn’t get many shots in the second half because we didn’t take care of the ball.”

Dominguez 82, Hoover 37--The Dons, who have allowed an average of 40 points per game, limited Hoover to 37 points to improve their record to 5-4. Point guard Marlon Vaughn, who has signed to play with Cal State Fullerton next season, led all scorers with 14 points. Dominguez, top-seeded in the tournament, is 5-4.

Mission Viejo 70, Warren 57--The Diablos rebounded from two losses in the Irvine Tournament with an impressive victory. Forward Scott Pedersen paced the Diablos (8-2) with 26 points and Jeff Herdman added 15.

California 70, Irvine 61--The Vaqueros’ top player, Mike Herring, was ill and did not suit up as Irvine’s record fell to 6-5. Herring is averaging 15.9 points per game, but center Shawn Patchell picked up the slack with 20 points.

Edison 89, Laguna Hills 39--Forward Ken Ammann scored 23 points in only three quarters of play as the Chargers rolled to an easy win. The Chargers (7-2) played without starting center Doug Kantona, who is injured.

Center Tim Christiansen was the Sea Kings’ leading rebounder with 15. Todd Bearbower had 9 assists and 6 steals for Corona del Mar (8-1).

Cypress 64, Long Beach Jordan 60--The Centurions were wide awake for the 9 a.m. game and took an early lead. Jordan woke up in the second half and pulled to within 61-60 with 1 1/2 minutes left in the game. Troy O’Leary sealed the win for Cypress (4-4) with three free throws. Chris Yoxtheimer paced the Centurions with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
