Heart Recipient Baby Moses ‘Healthy, Happy,’ May Go Home
Baby Moses, the 5-week-old infant who became the world’s youngest heart transplant patient when he was 4 days old, is “a healthy looking, happy baby” and may soon go home, hospital officials said Friday.
“Baby Moses is showing no signs either of rejection of his transplanted heart or of infection,” Dr. Leonard Bailey, who performed the Nov. 20 surgery, said in a statement released by Loma Linda University Medical Center. “His clinical status is excellent and he seems to be growing normally.”
The parents, whose identity has not been disclosed, spent Christmas opening gifts of stuffed animals for Baby Moses, who was dressed in a red Santa Claus suit, Dick Schaefer, the medical center spokesman, said.
Doctors are preparing to send the infant home, but no date has been set, he said. The infant was born with an invariably fatal condition known as hypoplastic left-heart syndrome.
