Italian government ministers signed an order Friday giving the go-ahead for a multi-billion-dollar project to link Sicily with the Italian mainland, the government announced.

The rail and road link will cross the 3-mile-wide Straits of Messina, but it has yet to be decided whether it will be in the form of a bridge or a tunnel, although industry sources consider a bridge more likely.

The announcement said the company Stretto di Messina, 51% owned by the government, would take charge of the project.
