Mexico Recognizes Texas’ Independence

The government news agency Notimex took note of today’s 140th anniversary of Texas’ admission to the United States.

A special column carried by the news agency said, “On Dec. 29, 1845, 140 years ago, the then-Republic of Texas, whose territory had belonged to Mexico since colonial ties, was accepted as a state of the American Union upon recognizing the Congress of the United States the Texan Constitution.

“In that way it culminated a long process that had started practically since James Monroe launched in 1808 the thesis that the United States had been created to dominate the continent first, and then the entire world, with the expansionist theory of ‘manifest destiny.’

“There started, in another way, a series of actions that would have to lead to the loss of more than half of Mexican territory, by the invasion of the United States and the war respectively, in an era ill-fated for Mexico by a lack of organization and authentic national order.”
