DAMAGED THEATER WILL BE REBUILT
A historic theater in northeast England, devastated by a fire on Christmas Day, will be rebuilt, the administrator said Thursday.
The stage of the 120-year-old New Tyne Theater was destroyed and half the roof damaged in the Wednesday blaze. The cause of the fire was still unknown.
Jack Dixon, chairman of the voluntary cooperative running the theater, said plans were under way to have it in use by late 1986.
“We put a tremendous amount of work into reopening it as a theater in 1977 after it closed as a cinema, and we will go all out to make sure the show will go on,” Dixon said.
The theater is a legally protected building because of its working Victorian backstage machinery.
