Psychologist Uses Humor to Ease Pains of Parenting

It is never clear exactly where child psychologist Don Fleming stands in the war between parents and kids.
One minute he can be on the adultâs side, sympathizing with the parent whose tyke specializes in removing parts from the kitchen oven, remarking straight-faced, âThatâs the kind of child I call the interesting, fun, exciting, pain-in-the-ass kid.â
The next moment he can be seeing the world through the eyes of a 5-year-old, gleefully lampooning what he calls the âhelplessâ style of parenting, in which a worn-out mom pleads in desperation: âCanât you listen to me once ? Canât you make it easy on your mother?â
This is the path to disaster, Fleming will warn an audience of similarly plagued parents, his voice taking on the slyness of a Wall Street insider, âbecause the first thing the kid says when he hears that and sees mom saying she canât do anything more is, âI got âem now!ââ
In a field full of sober consultation, Fleming has built a reputation among parentsâ groups as a popular speaker by thrusting a whimsical saber into the eternal struggle of adults to control their children.
As far as Fleming has been able to see in his 20 years of experience, it is a losing battle, fraught with inconsistent strategies and unrealistic expectations.
And so he has chosen to laugh at it.
Fleming, 53, is schooled in child development (in addition to his private practice he is director of training for a Westside center for disturbed children), but he concentrates much of his attention on humorously dissecting mistakes that parents make.
His lectures delve into a mundane but troublesome world filled with issues like how to keep order on a long car trip, how to enforce civility between big brother and little brother and how to decide if Junior is ready to start eating with utensils.
What evolves is a sort of verbal how-not-to book, delivered with the good-natured ridicule of Bill Cosby and the confrontational empathy of Phil Donahue, bringing forth frequent groans of recognition from war-weary parents.
They were audible on a recent night in Sherman Oaks when Fleming, a rod-slender, ever-grinning man, started ticking off ineffective styles of parenting for an audience whose children attended a local nursery school.
There was not merely the âhelplessâ approach, but the Threatener: âThis is the one who says, âOne more time and youâre going to get it.â The trouble is, kids through thousands of years have never found out what âitâ is !â
There was the Storm Trooper: âThis is the person who is slowly going crazy, finally becomes a maniac, the eyes pop out and he screams âYou . . . better . . . get . . . going!â and the kid says to himself, âGoddamn, they mean it this time!â â
And the Laser Beam Look: âYou grit your teeth and hope the laser will drill a hole in the kidâs head and stop him.â
Fleming mocks these traditional disciplinary stances because he regards them as desperate afterthoughts, not part of a coherent system of setting limits for children, and thus they are doomed to fail because a child cannot interpret the often convoluted subtleties an adult may be trying to get across.
Such criticism is traditional. What distinguishes Fleming is his emphasis on quirks of parental behavior, rather than the science of child development, and his use of humor to prod an audience of parents into examining the everyday moments that drive them crazy.
To the mother who wonders how to stop her child from calling her names, Fleming may preface a reasoned examination of manipulating children by reminding his audience, âThere are two areas of children we canât control: what comes out of their mouths and what comes out of the other parts of their bodies.
âKids tell us things in a variety of ways that sometimes make us nuts,â Fleming advises his audiences, and with that he begins to play the role of the child, attempting to show parents how to listen to their kids and how to articulate limits.
Enjoys His Role
It is a role Fleming relishes. Shrill-voiced and enthusiastic, he freely admits that he still has âa lot of kid in me,â and occasionally threatens his audiences that he will write a book for kids called âHow to Outmaneuver Your Parents.â
âKids are very smart and at a very early age they learn our behavior,â he tells the parents. âMeaning that I know that if you call me from a certain place in the house, I have another 15 minutes before I have to do anything. That you behave in a certain way. That if youâre in the bathroom and youâre calling to me to brush my teeth in the other bathroom, you may check later and say, âWhy didnât you brush your teeth?â and Iâll say, âBecause, you dummy, you didnât check on me and I wanted to still play.â Thatâs what the kid would say to you if he could.â
The problem, Fleming says, is that in setting rules for their kids, many parents forget the gulf between the way they run their lives and what Fleming calls the childâs agenda.
What Is Wanted
âIn a restaurant, your agenda is for the kid not to make you look like a fool in public. Secondly, maybe to have a chance to talk to your spouse. And thirdly maybe to eat without wanting to throw up watching your kid.
âWhatâs the kidâs agenda? Within ten minutes: Borrrrring. And all of a sudden adults start behaving differently toward me. At home they donât say âDonât touch this, donât do that, be quiet.â So what do I do to adjust? âCause the one thing kids are very adept at are taking a boring situation and making it interesting. Go under the table and find a piece of dirty gum and chew on it, or maybe turn around and see a man with one ear and yell, âMommy, look at that man with one ear!â â
The mother who complained about her child calling her names says sheâs told him she doesnât like it. Fleming pounces on that point.
Gaining Some Power
âWhen you tell me that,â he says, again playing the child, âI write that in the book and say: âOh, she doesnât like me to call her names. â The point is, you give a kid power when you say that. Because unless you do something very frightening to a kid, you have no power over what he says.â
Flemings, who is married but has no children, says he works hard to balance his concerns for empathy by stressing that parents need to set firm limits--but must do it in language children understand.
âOne of the major tasks of early childhood is to test the limits. For the adult, it is to show them the limits.â
âHeâs extraordinarily on target,â said Wendy Cummings, director of the Sherman Oaks Presbyterian Nursery School, which has hired Fleming as a speaker to the schoolâs parents group annually for 15 years.
âHeâs had a lot of experience dealing with both normal and abnormal children. Most counselors work primarily with abnormal children, and sometimes they are not so good at relating to day-to-day stuff.â
Sleeping With Parents
On this evening, a hand rises in the audience and a mother wonders how to curb her child from trying to come to bed with her and her husband.
âThe question,â Fleming begins, âis how ready you are to be very strong? There are only a few ways to keep a kid out of bed. Move and donât tell the kid your address. Lock your door and prove to them they can survive. Iâve seen many kids survive that. Are you ready to do that?â
The interchange was an example of what Fleming tries to achieve.
âThere is a sense of isolation in many communities,â he said in an interview. âYou donât have the family support system we used to. A lot of parents will talk to friends about handling kids, but the dilemma is that while youâll occasionally find a parent intuitively doing a bang-up job, what you often hear parents doing is commiserating. Theyâre not always well-focused on how to make things work.
âIâve always looked at the ironies of life and loved the humor, but when youâre trained as a therapist nobody tells you you can use it as part of your work, and I think thatâs too bad. My humor isnât just related to style. Itâs a way of making parents feel understood and to relieve their guilt, to see how crazy we all get.â
