A 14-month-old South African girl who underwent a liver transplant with the help of a massive fund-raising campaign was listed in critical but stable condition at UCLA Medical Center. “It’s a positive sign that she’s remaining stable,” a nursing supervisor said. Doctors are keeping vigil to see if the child’s body will reject the new liver transplanted from a Portland, Ore., donor. Nicole, the youngest of four children, was born with a rare viral infection that was destroying her liver. Her mother, Doreen Hohowski of Johannesburg, worked with the Roundtable charity to raise funds for the transplant.
